Welcome to Koala Hill Flower Farm located in Ravensbourne and situated on the Great Dividing Range above the Lockyer Valley and north of Toowoomba, in south-east Queensland.
Hello, I am Wendy, a qualified horticulturist and florist. Together with Steve, my husband we run a small family farm helped by our daughter Laiza and granddaughter Maddie, we have all fallen in love with dahlias. I had grown up with the wonder of dahlias, their myriad of colours, shapes and sizes, tended to by my father Bill, who was an avid gardener and passed the love of the land on to me.
We have a secluded farm with a gorgeous rainforest creek, towering eucalypts, palms, and amazing wildlife (koalas, wallabies, betongs, bandicoots, possums, gliders, antechinus and melomys) and over 100 bird species. We care about our land and the forest and grow with natural fertilisers and composts, using biological controls for pests. Close to Ravensbourne National Park, we respect the land that for thousands of years has been traversed by the Jawowair and Jagera people on their way to the Bunya Mountains.
Our basaltic red soils are fertile, ideal for growing dahlias, with cool clear mountain air and plenty of sunshine. We now have over 4,000 dahlia plants grown under cover, selling many as cut flowers over the summer months. This year we are now able to offer our first season of tubers in a wide range of colours and types. On our farm we also grow a variety of eucalyptus and other foliage for the flower industry. In the last severe drought, the koalas ate through our paddock of newly planted eucalyptus trees, thus in honour of their survival against all odds (including wildfires in 2019), we named it Koala Hill Flower Farm.
Our introductory tuber sale was held in early June 2023 at the annual Farmfest Agricultural Show near Toowoomba. We loved meeting our new customers and helping them choose their favourite dahlias, or advice on splitting, storing, fertilizing, and planting. We are happy to share our experiences of growing dahlias with you. Please email us if you have any questions we will endeavour to assist. Subscribers to our website will be notified ahead of time about our sales and other activities. In the future we plan to offer farm visits and flower farmer florist workshops.
Happy gardening and we know growing dahlias will make you smile 😊
